Managed diversion lead time effects on flood response in a tidal freshwater river

چکیده

River diversions are a commonly used water management tool throughout the world. Low-gradient coastal rivers exhibit complex floodplain interactions and subject to multiple uncertain drivers of future flood risk. The interacting factors make quantification downstream diversion effects on ambient hazards in riverine ecosystems challenging. This article analyzes managed ecological (MED) flood-prone tidal freshwater Vermilion system situated within Atchafalaya Basin region Louisiana, USA. A flexible efficient hydraulic hydrologic (H&H) modeling setup counterfactual approach is utilized develop analyze 60 simulation scenarios aimed at quantifying an existing baseflow augmentation program under conditions. analysis demonstrated significance preemptive closure levels rivers. role wetland topography residual storage MED-induced response was also highlighted. variety parameter/forcing were evaluated establish robustness findings extend results more general settings. study provides insights induced by MEDs, which expected become prevalent future.

Dispersal potential of a tidal river and colonization of a created tidal freshwater marsh

Background and aims A created tidal freshwater wetland, with no extant seed bank, was monitored to evaluate the colonization potential of a tidal river, vegetation and seed bank changes, and also species persistence. Methodology The 32.3-ha mitigation, adjacent to the Delaware River, was completed in 1994. Three sites, with differing completion dates, and three locations (channel edge, midpoint...

Urban Flood Analysis Model for Plain Tidal River Network Region

Considering characteristics of high river density, special underlying surface in plain river network region, and municipal drainage system function, river network drainage unit model is proposed, which is defined as a region surrounded by main river or embankment. Flood storage variety and control projects regulation of small rivers in each unit is simulated. With drainage catchment as an objec...

Mississippi River flood of 2008: observations of a large freshwater diversion on physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of a shallow estuarine lake.

High nitrogen (N) loading to coastal aquatic systems can be expressed as increased algal production and subsequent low dissolved oxygen. In April, 2008, predictions for extreme flood stage for the Lower Mississippi River triggered the opening of the Bonnet Carré Spillway, a major release valve for the river. The spillway diverted approximately 8 km3 of water over one month of operation into Lak...

River Flood Prediction using Time Series Model

With the passage of time the impacts of natural hazards continue to increase around the world. The globalization and growth of human societies and their escalating complexity and river flooding will further increase the risks of natural hazards. Flood prediction and control are one of the greatest challenges facing the world today, which have become more frequent and severe due to the effects o...

Emergy Analysis of Tidal Freshwater Marsh and Mudflat Sportfish Communities on Anacostia River, Washington, D.C

The ecological role of tidal freshwater marshes as important fish spawning and nursery habitat has been studied, although fish utilization of associated intertidal mudflats have not been as extensively investigated. Using the same sampling methodology, fish surveys of three separate areas of the Anacostia River in Washington, D.C. were conducted using a boat based electrofishing unit. The sport...
